]]> ACT scores come out tomorrow! Remember that these scores do not indicate how intelligent anyone is, how sharp, how valuable. They are only tools to improve your chances of getting into colleges. If you crushed it, congratulations! If yours are not where you want, you’ll be disappointed. That’s normal. But once you’re done cussing, think about what you can do to prepare for the next test. Here’s a good example of what not to do when you face disappointment!

]]> As we have mentioned and as research shows, effective test prep requires breaks. Reading on the side is a great way to take that break while honing an essential skill for success on the upcoming SAT. This is a good one, which includes one of the better sentences written recently: “Spotted skunks perform a spread-eagled handstand before they spray you.” Also apt because it notes that “some skunks are just jerks.” Reminds me of a certain standardized test that’s approaching!

BTW, trichomes, seen in the first place photo, were something we learned about in grad school while studying plants. They act kind of like anti-tank devices and actually tear off the soft legs of herbivores (caterpillars) as these beasts walk across a leaf’s surface. Yes, plants are savage! And so is the SAT! ]]> The ACT is tomorrow (or Sunday for some of you). Tonight at 5 (or Saturday night!) is the time to stop studying. Put down your notes, practice tests, flashcards. Print out your tickets for tomorrow and put together your snacks: granola bars and a drink that contains sugar. Mints are also a good idea since experiments show that peppermint oil improves cognitive function. Now relax. Up until 5, however, continue to review punctuation rules and math facts, formulas, anything that troubles you. But at 5, put a stop to all thoughts about the ACT. Pretend you are a bridge in Durham, NC!
